Verification and Validation

It’s easy to get confused trying to convey the meaning of these two simple but related definitions.

Essence

• Verification — requirements are met.
• Validation — requirements for specific use are met.

Example

• Verification — the engine has 20 hp.
• Validation — the engine with 20 hp will not move a truck.

ISO 9000:2005 Standard

Definitions:

• Verification — confirmation through the provision of objective evidence that specified requirements have been fulfilled.

• Validation — confirmation through the provision of objective evidence that requirements for a specific intended use or application have been fulfilled.

Related definitions:

• Requirement — a need or expectation that is stated, generally implied, or obligatory.

• Objective evidence — data supporting the existence or truth of something.
